Tim Wellens won in the 14th stage of the Vuelta, contested between Lugo and Ourense (Galicia). This is the Trudonnaire's second success on this Tour of Spain.
In a hill sprint atop a nearly 2 kilometer bump, Wellens was faster than Michael Woods and Zdeněk Štybar.
The 3 men were part of a seven-runner breakaway that had formed after some 40 miles of racing.
With 3 third category ribs on the menu and a rather rolling profile between climbs, all the ingredients were there to make the breakaway last. Tim wellens “Lotto Soudal’s goal was to win at least one stage of this Vuelta.
After my victory in the 5th stage in Sabiñanigo, we hoped to be able to go and look for another one.
I knew today’s stage was right for me, I had it in mind for a while.
It's one thing to check off the stages that are in your favor, but it's another to hit the right breakaway and have the legs to finish the job.
Today everything went according to plans ".

Tim Wellens, the starting leader at Alès, started last to defend his 45 ’lead over his closest rivals. Wellens struggled to finish fourth on the day, 29 ’’ behind Ganna. A performance that also saw him relegate Kwiatkowski to 53 ’’ in the final standings. Tim wellens “This final victory was largely achieved at the end of the 3rd stage. To start the final stopwatch with more than 40 seconds in advance was quite comfortable. This morning already, I felt that I had good legs, but I was above all very motivated. You should know that Vic Swerts, founder and owner of Soudal, is celebrating his 81st birthday today and I wanted to give him this gift. This time suited me very well. I developed an average power greater than planned and I was finally able to clinch the final victory. The fact of having recognized the course before th...

Around Jesus Herrada and Nicolas Edet, the team will be determined to shine the colors of the Cofids team once again. Christophe LAPORTE : “The results of these five stages are necessarily very positive. Since this winter, I knew I was in good condition. I wanted to reassure myself in the race and I did that by winning the first stage. Of course, there is a little disappointment about the general classification but I prefer to keep only the good collective performance. The team were really strong in the final. Christophe Laporte, the Var puncher from the Cofidis team, took the first stage of the Etoile de Bessèges after a particularly thrilling final. He won by countering Nacer Bouhanni of the Arkea Samsic team. Nacer Bouhanni played the surprise card by attacking halfway through the last bump. Christophe Laporte was the only one to take his wheel to pass it before the line. Injured at the start of last season, Christophe Laporte shows in spectacular fashion that he is back to his best. In a race he won two years ago, he will do anything to keep the leader's jersey. Both riders wore an Ekoï AR14 helmet and Ekoï Premium 80 glasses. Christophe LAPORTE "I'm super happy, it's just happiness! 2020 has not been an easy year. All winter I was very motivated, I didn't have any problems and I knew my shape was good. I knew that to perform, I had to be well placed at the top of thebump. I expected someone to attack and I would have to manage my effort and get under the pedal. I did it and I'm also happy to have grabbed a few bonus seconds for the overall. Tomorrow is a sprint that I have already won but the field is higher. We will also try to take bonuses in view of Sunday's stopwatch. I am very proud to have started the season well for the team and to give confidence to my teammates and all the staff. We will do everything to continue our momentum! " Nacer BOUHANNI "I recognized the final of this first stage yesterday. I knew the climb up the Route de la Tour was more conducive to punchers than sprinters. I wanted to test myself nonetheless. I tried in the finale for this reason. I came to this 2021 edition of the Etoile de Bessèges to target the sprint stages. There w...

Tim Wellens notched a fine stage victory in the Tour of Spain, edging out Guillaume Martin and Thymen Arensman in a three-man sprint. The Belgian Lotto Soudal also endorses the jersey of the leader of the mountain classification. The three men, the only survivors of the day's breakaway, fought for victory in the streets of Sabiñanigo. “From the start of the Vuelta, the team’s ambition was to win a stage,” said the very attacking Tim Wellens, who has already spent three days in the breakaway in this Tour of Spain. "It's really good that the goal is reached so early in the race, we will be able to tackle the next two weeks without any stress. I already had the breakaway in mind this morning. The start was very difficult, we drove at full speed for two hours. I finally had the chance to find myself in the front group. The collaboration was not easy because we had with us two riders well classified overall. There were three of us then and the relationship was much better. We were all at the same level but I was finally able to make the difference on the big percentages just before the finish." Tim Wellens, winner of several stage races, already has two Giro stages to his name, but this is his first victory in the Vuelta. After a difficult campaign on the classics, Tim Wellens wanted to take part in the Vuelta to end on a good note this 2020 season so short and so special. “I had a tough time after I crashed just before the start of the Tour de France. I returned to competition at the Tour du Luxembourg but it took me a long time to get back to good feelings. I had a few fears when I got to the start of the Vuelta so I'm really happy with this stage victory, ...

But with the lack of international confrontation, it was difficult to project. Of course, I'm leaving more than satisfied with my first two World Cup podiums. I see that victory is getting closer and it’s really motivating for the future. Overall, we have had an amazing week all together with the team. Everyone has done a tremendous amount of work to ensure that we are in the best possible conditions and that can be felt on the bike. " Victor Koretzky: "A very dense level" “I started my week perfectly with second place in the XCC. Although I had some problems afterwards at the XCO, I managed to get back into the game for the last two events of the season. Today with Milan we had a really good race, taking our responsibilities. In times, I have never been so close to victory. We could see this week that the level was very dense. I think that now ten riders can win a World Cup. I can't wait to be next. " Thomas Litscher: "A great dynamic" “Even though back problems prevented me from expressing myself properly today, I'm pretty happy with my week, including a podium. The general atmosphere in the team is excellent and that makes you hurt yourself even more on the bike. Now it's time for the World Championship in Austria where I have the feeling that anything is possible. " ...

Kopecky therefore succeeds her teammate Jesse Vandenbulcke. Alongside this road title, the 24-year-old is also the current national time trial champion. Monkfish Kopecky “I've been chasing this national title for a long time. This victory therefore gives me great pleasure. It was really a great team performance today. My teammates took matters into their own hands from the start. They hardened the race and they neutralized a lot of attacks. After all this work, I had to conclude. " “I wasn't afraid to attack soon enough. In the end, it paid off. I was able to make the race more difficult for Jolien and that had an impact on her in the sprint. At one point the peloton was very close and I tried to surprise them by attacking in the Tiegemberg. She didn't really like it, but we were able to keep up the pace. " “When Shari joined us in the last few kilometers, I quickly felt she was going to be satisfied with third place. I started my sprint 200 meters from the finish line. I panicked a bit as I shifted gears, but luckily that didn't cause too much of a problem. Jolien was right next to me and I knew I had to go all out until the end. " “I raised my arms because I felt I had won. When Jolien did the same, I started to have doubts. We then had to wait a long time before receiving official confirmation. The minutes seemed to last forever. The relief was great when they announced that I had won. After my stage victory at the Giro Rosa last week, here is another g...

Nacer Bouhanni “The race was very fast from the start, but the team controlled as much as possible to make it a sprint. Benoit Jarrier, Florian Vachon & Alan Riou held the helm in front of the peloton Donavan Grondin pulled a good stretch to the last corner, and then I had Bram Welten and Dan McLay to start the sprint. I just had to finish the job. " "I'm happy to win this event for the Arkéa-Samsic team, but also for Florian Vachon who was competing in the last race of his professional career today. I told him while laughing last night, "like tomorrow, it's your last competition, you'll keep your bibs!" "He told me then" only if you win! I told him then, "I'll try to win for you." I also gave Florian my cup and the bouquet. It’s good to end up like this. It gives us all a boost. I am happy to offer him the end of his career with this success ”. “After the Brussels Classic, it was complicated. I had pain all over, especially in the neck. Once the aches were gone, I did a big week of training. The recovery in Italy did me good: the Gi ro della Toscana & the Coppa Sabatini. The average was high on these two events. The second day, it was a puncher's arrival. It allowed me to get back into it, because I did not run for a while between Brussels and these two events, now I will continue with Paris-Camembert & Paris-Chauny ".
